These are strange times. We’re all stuck at home trying to teach our kids, or at least get them to do their assignments. For a lot of us, it’s a miserable failure.
In fact, I know of two different Ninja Dad kids fights that happened yesterday. One was over a ruler, the other was over a blanket. It doesn’t really matter what it was about, the main thing is that they will fight over anything.
I understand that the rules during quarantine are different, but come on. Really? Just because there’s no school and fewer people are wearing pants to Zoom meetings doesn’t meant that fighting and constant bickering is okay! There’s still schoolwork to be done!
So how do we get them to stop fighting? Or playing with the dog? Or stop watching their devices and start some schoolwork?
Sounds too easy, right? It works really well. I bought 2 timers on Amazon and I have the kids set them for 45 minutes. They have to keep working for the 45 minutes and then they get a 20–30-minute break. They also have to choose separate places in the house to do their work.
This way I get some peace and quiet, and they get their work done. Best $8.00 I ever spent.
Does that mean they’re always on task? No. But it is a huge improvement. I was starting to put on my referee shirt and whistle every morning. It was like WWE RAW in here. Brutal.
It’s better now. Until the Undertaker shows up, at least.
We enjoy many things about the Ninja Dad life, but one thing we don’t like is repeating ourselves. Constantly. Especially when it has to do with manners, behavior, and general commonsense decorum.
So, rather than nag ourselves hoarse, we developed a genius reminder system to keep our kids in line. They’re called manners cards, and we swear, sometimes they actually work. Check them out here.
